Yoga is often thought of as a physical practice—stretching, strengthening, and moving the body. But yoga also invites us to pay attention to what is happening beneath the surface. One way to explore that deeper connection is through the chakra system, a traditional yogic framework for understanding energy, awareness, and our relationship with ourselves and the world around us.
The word chakra comes from Sanskrit and is commonly translated as “wheel.” The seven main chakras are traditionally described as energy centers running from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. Each is associated with different qualities, emotions, and areas of personal awareness.
Root Chakra — Muladhara
Located at the base of the spine, the Root Chakra represents stability, security, and grounding. Practices that connect us with our legs, feet, and the earth can help cultivate a sense of steadiness.
Try Mountain Pose, Warrior I, or a grounding standing flow while focusing on slow, intentional breaths.
Sacral Chakra — Svadhisthana
Located in the lower abdomen, the Sacral Chakra is associated with creativity, pleasure, movement, and emotional expression.
Hip-opening poses such as Bound Angle, Goddess, and gentle hip circles can encourage freedom and fluidity. Instead of worrying about how a pose looks, notice how movement feels.
Solar Plexus Chakra — Manipura
Centered around the upper abdomen, the Solar Plexus Chakra represents confidence, personal power, and determination.
Strength-building poses such as Plank, Boat, and Warrior III can help us physically explore these qualities. As you practice, consider asking yourself: Where am I ready to trust my own strength?
Heart Chakra — Anahata
The Heart Chakra is connected with love, compassion, connection, and forgiveness.
Heart-opening poses such as Cobra, Bridge, and Supported Fish create space across the chest. Pair your practice with slow breathing and an intention of offering yourself the same compassion you give to others.
Throat Chakra — Vishuddha
Located around the throat, this chakra represents communication, truth, and authentic expression.
Gentle neck stretches, Cat-Cow, and Supported Fish can bring awareness to this area. You might also incorporate humming, chanting, or simply speaking an intention aloud.
Third Eye Chakra — Ajna
Located between the eyebrows, the Third Eye Chakra is associated with intuition, insight, and inner wisdom.
Quiet poses such as Child’s Pose, Forward Fold, or seated meditation encourage us to turn our attention inward. Give yourself permission to become still enough to listen.
Crown Chakra — Sahasrara
Located at the crown of the head, the Crown Chakra represents connection, consciousness, and a sense of something greater than ourselves.
Meditation and Savasana are beautiful ways to explore this energy. Rather than trying to accomplish something, simply practice being present.
Creating Balance Through Awareness
Working with the chakras does not require seeing or feeling energy in a particular way. Think of the chakra system as an invitation to become more curious about yourself.
Some days you may need grounding. Other days you may need confidence, creativity, compassion, or quiet reflection. Yoga gives us tools to explore all of these qualities through movement, breath, meditation, and awareness.
The goal isn't to create perfect balance. It is to notice where you are, honor what you need, and use your practice to reconnect with yourself—one breath at a time.
